What to Expect at Your Lifestyle Family Photoshoot

Your lifestyle family photography session is about so much more than just taking pictures—it’s about capturing real, beautiful moments in the season of life you’re in right now. Whether you’re welcoming a newborn, chasing after a toddler, or gathering your family together for some updated portraits, my goal is to make this experience as calm, enjoyable, and stress-free as possible.

In this post, as a family photographer in Philadelphia, I’ll walk you through some key aspects of preparing for your session, like what to wear to create timeless photos, how to approach a newborn shoot even when you’re running on empty, and why I’ll never expect a toddler to sit perfectly still (and why that’s actually a good thing!).

By the end of this, I hope you’ll feel excited and ready to embrace this experience, knowing that I’m here to guide you every step of the way. Here is what to expect at your lifestyle family photoshoot in Philadelphia or beyond…

What to Wear for Timeless Family Photos

Choosing what to wear for your lifestyle family photoshoot can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. The key is to keep things simple, cohesive, and most importantly, you.

Here are a few tips to help you create a timeless look for your session:

Stick to Neutral or Muted Tone

Soft, neutral colors like cream, beige, gray, and pastels photograph beautifully and create a timeless aesthetic. Avoid bold patterns or neon colors, as they can distract from the natural emotion and connection in your photos.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical white shirts and jeans. Instead, aim for outfits that complement each other without being overly matchy.

Think of a soft color palette with a mix of textures—perhaps mom wears a flowy dress in muted tones, dad pairs a crisp button-down with khaki pants, and the kids wear outfits with subtle details that tie everything together.

Choose Comfort

Your comfort matters, especially when you’re wrangling little ones. Pick outfits that allow everyone to move and play naturally during the lifestyle family photoshoot

Flowy dresses, soft fabrics, and layers are great options for comfort without sacrificing style.

Start Early

Planning outfits ahead of time can help you avoid last-minute stress. Lay everything out a few days before your session to make sure everything works together and feels right.

Remember, these photos are about capturing your family’s connection and love, not just your outfits. The most important thing is that everyone feels comfortable and confident.

Preparing for a Newborn Photoshoot (Even When Exhausted)

If you’re in the newborn stage, I know how overwhelming it can feel to prepare for a lifestyle family photoshoot when you’re already running on little sleep.

But don’t worry—your session is designed to feel as easy and gentle as possible, and I’ll be there to support you every step of the way.

Here’s how to prepare without adding to your stress:

Keep It Simple

Don’t feel like you need to bring a ton of props or fancy outfits.

A neutral swaddle, a favorite onesie, or even just your baby in their diaper can create some of the sweetest, most timeless images.

Focus on the Essentials

Bring anything your baby might need during the session, like extra diapers, wipes, and a bottle (if you’re bottle-feeding). For you, consider having a spare shirt on hand, just in case.

Trust Me to Handle the Details

During the session, I’ll guide you through everything. I know how to position your baby safely and naturally, and I’ll always work around their needs—whether that means pausing for feedings, soothing them, or just giving them a little break.

Don’t Worry About Perfection

If your baby is fussy or not cooperating, that’s okay! Some of the most heartfelt images come from the in-between moments—snuggles, soothing, or even a yawn.

You don’t have to show up with everything perfect. You just need to show up. My goal is to capture the sweetness and beauty of this fleeting stage, just as it is.

Why I Won’t Ask a Toddler to Sit Still (and Why That’s a Good Thing)

Let’s be honest—toddlers are busy, curious, and full of energy. The last thing I’m going to do is expect your little one to sit perfectly still and smile on command. Not only is that unrealistic, but it also misses out on what makes this stage of life so magical.

Instead, I embrace the chaos and energy that comes with photographing toddlers.

Here’s why this approach works so well:

Natural Moments Are the Best Moments

By letting toddlers move, explore, and just be themselves, I can capture genuine expressions and interactions. Whether they’re twirling, running, or holding your hand, these moments reflect their personality in a way that staged poses never could.

It Takes the Pressure Off

When parents don’t feel the need to control their toddler’s behavior during the lifestyle family photoshoot, everyone relaxes—and that’s when the magic happens.

I’ll gently guide your little one into activities or positions, but I’ll also follow their lead to keep things fun and authentic.

Play Is Part of the Process

I often incorporate little games, songs, or silly prompts to keep your toddler engaged and happy. This not only makes the session more enjoyable for them but also creates opportunities for joyful, natural photos.

So, if your toddler decides to run in circles or refuses to sit in one spot, don’t worry—that’s part of the process.

I’m here to capture the love and connection within your family, exactly as it is.
